The stuff at the far end of the Strip is cheaper…something like The Sahara. If you don’t care if you stay at a casino/hotel, try.

The Sahara is actually a lot cheaper than even the Motel 6, and it’s on the Strip. During the week, it’s usually about $40 a night, and I think it goes up to about $70 a night on weekends, which is like $100 less than most Vegas Strip hotels.
Imperial Palace is a good choice too. Not only is it right in the middle of the Strip, it’s only about $40 a night right now during the week, and maybe about $100 a night on weekends. That’s not too bad, and they’re pretty nice rooms too.

Mid-week many hotels are inexpensive. Imperial Palace is usually the lowest priced major casino hotel right on the strip. If you can stay on the strip for $40 or $50 why walk. Midweek prices are usually lower in a casino than in the budget motels. Casinos are generally selling rooms at a loss because they are hoping to make money on you in other ways. It’s the old “heads in beds” game.
On weekends the strip casinos can sometimes triple in price. Terrible’s casino is an off-strip casino that has a nice swimming pool and is a short walk to Hard Rock. Food service is at a minimum (a cafe and a buffet) and there are very few table games. Just slot machines and inexpensive rooms. The hotel is about 30 years old, but the “new tower” is about 2-3 years old. Hooters is a low price casino that is very close to the strip.
There is a 600 room Motel 6 next to Hooters, but it is pretty run down. It’s a good place to stay if you bring your dog.

All of the above are about one mile west of the strip, and they all have free shuttles to the strip.
Stratosphere
This one is at the North end of the strip, and usually has the best deals of any strip hotel.

No need to walk! The ORLEANS and it’s sister property the GOLD COAST have a free shuttle to the strip (Bill’s Gambling Hall) every 20 minutes or so and best of all their room rates are very good. Check out their websites (just Google Orleans Las Vegas or Gold Coast Las Vegas ) and see for yourself.

I would stay directly on the Las Vegas strip. Check Excalibur hotel e.g. - it is a nice hotel in a good location. Check the current hotel promotions on

You can stay on the strip for not much money at all. I don’t like to spend a lot on my hotel rooms, either, so we always stay at Excalibur for $51/night. It is at a great location on the strip, right across from MGM Grand, and within walking distance to everything.
Using the link above, here are some options

Sahara from $25/night (not a great location, but is on strip)
Stratosphere from $28/night
OFF STRIP
Hooters from $36/night (easy walk to strip- not far at all!)
Palms from $55/night (party hotel)

Rio from $59/night (all rooms are suites and free shuttle to strip)
The Orleans from $36/night
Even if you stay at Sahara or Stratosphere which are way up on the North end of the strip and not really near the big hotels, transportation in Vegas is easy to come by. The bus runs up and down the strip all day long and is only $5 for a 24-hour pass. The monorail has a stop at Sahara and stops at some of the major hotels along the strip for $9 for a 24-hour pass. Taxis can get expensive, but if you are going a short distance, like from Stratosphere to Treasure Island, it shouldn’t cost you too much. So no matter what, you will be able to stay in a classic Vegas hotel.

You might want to consider an offer that is currently running where you stay at a nice resort for free (near strip) and all you have to do is listen to a short presentation from the resort. Might be worth checking out. Ad is running in Backpage.com. I’ll list link below.

Orleans is a good bet. Less than $50 a night. Don’t worry so much about “walking distance” to the strip because they offer free shuttle.
