This site gives you recommended hotels and reviews by people who have been there.
You can sort them by Cheapest to Most expensive, popularity, etc. You can even book online.
Have a good trip!

Go to Hotwire.com. You’ll get the best prices there. We stayed at the Hudson for $99.00/night.

just went in April. after much research, we stayed at the super 8 times square, it was 249.00 a night, also stayed at the Edison, that was 180.00 a night. Those were the best rates I could find at a clean hotel in Manhattan, Both have a great location

Vacation Rentals by Owners is a great alternative to Hotels, and if you don’t necessarily use room service, it’s an awesome website to check out. And when I say alternative, I’m not saying hostels or run-down apartment buildings. I stayed at a very clean, very friendly, and VERY cheap apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn. $100 a night for my family of 5. Also, if you want a cheap place to stay, you need to venture out of Manhattan. Times Square from my rental was only a 20 minute subway ride.

I stayed here ALL the time when I was in college (over 12 times) until I moved here after!
Prime location (1 block from Central Park, about 6 from Times Square)! Rooms are not beautiful but clean and nice and the best part is the BEST pizza in NYC is located right downstairs from the hotel! I still go there to eat!
They do not advertise because it is so low in price, but give them a call, you won’t be sorry! Their prices have not went up in 10 years! Falls between $89 to $128 a night INCLUDING tax!!! And it has Wi-Fi!
