Have You Ever Considered House Swapping?

Cheap Hotels No Comments »

For alternative accommodation options, the somewhat recent phenomenon of house swapping has become a very popular way to holiday to distant locations with all the comforts of home. But before jumping into this kind of holiday accommodation, you should understand just how house swapping works and what the main pros and cons of holidaying in someone else’s house - while you are providing your own home as alternative accommodation to them - really are.

When it comes to house swapping, many travelers prefer to agree to vacations or holidays that last at least a week… but generally these vacations are for much longer stays. House swapping has always been an alternative accommodation that can allow you and the people that are swapping your house with to experience life the way that locals do.

The way that house swapping works is that you will need to advertise when your house will be available for others and an estimated value will need to be established based on the size and location of the home. The home needs to be fully furnished with a fully equipped kitchen that house swappers can cook in, laundry facilities for them to wash clothes in and the essential basics. They don’t need your personal items, so unless you know the people you are swapping with, it is best to have these packed away and in storage before you plan to enter into a house swapping arrangement.

There are house swapping services that handle the paperwork and you list what you are willing to swap and what kind of alternative accommodation you are willing to swap for. Most of the larger, reputable vacation rental companies will offer this kind of service, but there are companies that specialize in pre-screening the credit and criminal records of house swapping parties to make for a safe house swapping experience on both ends.

You don’t necessarily swap houses with the people that are going to be staying in yours. The house swapping service matches equal house swappers in multi-swap arrangements. So there can be many house swapping transactions in one single house swap for your alternative accommodation.

For example, let’s say you live in Florida and you decide to list your house for house swapping in a particular week in July and you want to go to Europe.  But the couple that has a house to swap in Europe wants to go to Michigan. A third house swapper in Michigan wants to go to Florida. In this house swapping transaction, a three-way house swap would occur and all three parties get the alternative accommodation they want, but none of them are staying in the house of the person who is staying in theirs.

When it comes to an alternative accommodation to cheap hotel rooms, this can be an attractive way to vacation or holiday for a week or more in the location you desire - without any money for lodging at stake. The downside can be that you are turning your house over to strangers you have never met. When there is a reputable house swapping agency involved, they will typically charge damage deposits and the people that are house swapping have an equal valued alternative accommodation at stake. Understandably, some people don’t like the idea of strangers staying in their home for a week while they are on vacation or holiday. So this is something that you must be happy to do if you are to enter into this kind of accommodation agreement.

There are several ways to look at this, but the most important one can actually be security. It is like having a built-in house-sitter while you are away. The other thing is that some house swappers tend to return year after year to places they love. The main thing to consider is packing away the things that have sentimental value to you because you should only offer an attractive alternative accommodation that has the basic essentials in décor and accessories. These basic items will ensure you make the home as comfortable as possible for visitors that are staying there.

This can include upgrading features like linen, china and accessories, but you can save as much as $5,000 in some cases, depending on where you want to spend a week for your house swap. You get the built in security of somebody staying in your house while you are away on vacation and you get the advantage of having equally comfortable alternative accommodation for your holiday or vacation for nothing more than a nominal finder’s fee.

House swapping can offer more advantages than disadvantages, when done correctly. A third party facilitator can be the best way to get house swapping that fits your needs, saves you money and offers you the best house guests while you are away.

Why You Should Never Leave Without Travel Insurance

What if you lose your passport or money while you are on vacation? What if you can’t continue the rest of your trip due to illness and can’t get a refund or worse yet, what if you are injured in a foreign country and can’t get treatment? Travel insurance can give you options that give you peace of mind and this can make a real difference in difficult situations.

Travel insurance is very affordable when compared to the kind of losses you could encounter. Whether it is travel insurance to cover any loss of your airline booking due to illness or travel insurance that covers you during your flights or travel insurance that covers you when you are in a foreign country, the peace of mind you get is only part of the benefit. The monetary pay-offs can far exceed the premiums, and the cost of the premiums are generally low because claim incidences could be deemed rare and inexpensive by the insurance company.

That doesn’t mean that travel insurance isn’t a worthwhile investment. Even though it might be cheap to purchase, you have to consider the risks that you could encounter during your travels and holiday activities. Once you find the travel insurance that addresses your needs, you need to read the details of coverage or certificate of insurance to make sure those particular risks are covered. In addition, you should consider the risks involved with medical issues like infection or injury whilst overseas that your health insurance company won’t usually cover.

For example, a short term international medical insurance plan or medical evacuation travel insurance policy should be considered essential for peace of mind, if you have had any history of serious illness, like heart problems or serious diabetes, for example. Depending on where you plan to travel, emergency assistance in a foreign country - with foreign language barriers - can be very limited and you may need travel insurance to get you back home or get you proper care when you are overseas.

You can get cheap travel insurance because it is a short-term policy, and the payoffs can be big. In many cases, you might be able to get this for under $50 from some online insurance brokers like www.worldtravelcenter.com. Just be sure that the insurance company is reputable and that the travel insurance policy offers the coverage you need, based on where you will be holidaying. For example, if you are going to be traveling domestically where your health insurance would cover these types of medical expenses, there wouldn’t be a need for this type of travel insurance, but overseas, it could become invaluable if you get sick unexpectedly.

Trip cancellation travel insurance is another policy that can cover your pre-paid expenses when you are planning a trip, but have to cancel due to an unforeseen illness. These are cheap travel insurance policies that can give you peace of mind and recoup your expenses for a trip you can’t go ahead with. Sometimes the premiums are as low as $20!

For those that take out flight insurance policies, these are often a life insurance policy that only kicks in and pays off if the plane causes serious injury or death. The odds of this are so remote that the travel insurance premium might be less than $15!  It is a form of peace of mind, especially for those that are afraid of flying.

As you can see, there are a variety of variations, when it comes to travel insurance policies. Sometimes, your own insurance agent might be able to offer a supplementary rider to your homeowner’s policy, but often these policies are sold by those that specialize in travel insurance and sometimes, they can be bought at the same time you are making your reservations i.e. with an airline, cruise ship, or third party travel agent.

The most important part of purchasing travel insurance is to make sure your concerns are addressed and that you consider what you need to insure against. Medical concerns are the most popular reasons because medical care in some foreign countries can be very expensive or limited enough that you would need to be evacuated to another country. The cost of this type of travel insurance is definitely worth the peace of mind for those that are the highest risk. But remember, you should read the fine print to fully understand what the travel insurance does and doesn’t cover.

So always get several quotes on the type of travel insurance coverage you want, unless it is coverage offered through the travel supplier you are booking through. Read the terms and conditions of the travel insurance coverage carefully to be sure there are no hidden loop-holes. This can be essential to having real peace of mind when traveling - especially if you are traveling to a foreign country where your personal health insurance would not cover.

Cheap Hotels 8 Comments »
. . asked:

We’ll be traveling to Houston to look at some property and are looking for some where to stay. Since we expect to be there at least a week, all the hotels I’ve been able to find online are like 90 or more per night plus tax and all that. Staying for a week, it really adds up, you know?

Any suggestions? NW Houston area, Inner loop, downtown preferred.

Thanks for the help.
