We stayed at the Radius International which is very close to Bukit Bintang, street markets, roadside food stalls and supermarkets if they’re looking to travel on the cheap and self-cater. It’s only about US$40 a night on asiarooms (http://asiarooms.com/malaysia/kuala_lumpur/radius_international.html)
It’s exceptional value for a good quality, safe and clean hotel and it’s also within walking distance to the Petronas and KL Tower. Other options include the Allson Genesis across the road for a fraction less, plus many other options as the exchange rate is so good. However, I’d always go back to the Radius for excellent value accommodation.

There are plenty of cheap hotels around Jalan Bukit Bintang from the junction of Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Bukit Bintang. Around the area you may find Hotel Bintang, Hotel Nova etc. They are all basically safe and fairly clean and very basic.
Coming up soon is the Tune Hotel , a subsidary of Air Asia just opposite Maju Junction. I think they cost only RM9.99 per night. Booking only online.

You can try Replica Inn off Jalan Alor (behind KFC) or Bintang Warisan for RM 80-120 with en suite proper shower, windows and safe, too.

I would strongly suggest Tune Hotel in Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. Though not in Bukit Bintang area but is a strategic location for tourists as well. Price is reasonable with No Frills Concept. Opening in April.
